Sofia City Province

With a population of 1,246,791, and some 1,377,761 in the metropolitan area, it is the 15th largest city in the European Union.

It is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of the mountain massif Vitosha and is the administrative, cultural, and economic centre of Bulgaria.

Being one of the oldest capital cities in Europe, the history of Sofia dates back to the 8th century BC. At that time Thracians established a settlement there.

Sofia has had several names in the different periods of Bulgaria, and remnants of the city's millenarian history can still be seen today alongside modern landmarks.

Stolichna (a suburb)

Bankya is close to Pernik and the capital Sofia. The municipality is famous for the mineral springs and baths that have been used for their medicinal properties for hundreds of years. The Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov is a native.

Novi Iskar is and the Capital Municipality. It is often regarded as a suburb of Sofia. It lies in the northern part of the Sofia Valley, with the gorge of the Iskar's through the Balkan Mountains beginning just north of the town.
 
Novi Iskar was formed through the merging of the villages Aleksandar Voykov, Gnilyane and Kurilo in 1974, with Aleksandar Voykov being the result of the merging of Kumaritsa and Slavovtsi in 1955.
